Experiencing the Great Migration on a safari holiday is an extraordinary adventure. Witnessing two million animals moving together, the largest herd migration on the planet, is a spectacle filled with raw drama and breathtaking moments. From wildebeest to zebras and gazelles, the rhythm of survival unfolds before your eyes as they cross rivers, face predators, and brave vast landscapes in search of fresh grazing. This awe-inspiring journey offers a front-row seat to one of nature’s most incredible phenomena.
More than 2 million animals have to cross crocodile-infested rivers and face natural disasters such as droughts and flooding in a daily struggle for survival. Guided by survival instinct, each wildebeest will cover 800 to 1,000 kilometres on its individual journey. It is unclear how the wildebeest know which way to go, but it is generally believed that their journey is dictated primarily by their response to the weather;they follow the rains and the growth of new grass.
Often referred to as ‘The Greatest Show on Earth,’ it is no wonder that the thousands of guests who flock to Kenya and Tanzania each year in the hopes of seeing this natural event arrive with big expectations! With up to 1,000 animals per kilometres squared, the great columns of wildebeest can even be seen from space.
